SAGA

SAGA is a collaborative multidisciplinary art project developed by MOLS MAGAZINE, a culture magazine based in Berlin, and sound artist Makoto Sakamoto, who runs the independent music label MAKOTO SAKAMOTO RECORDINGS.

Starting with music events, we envision SAGA as a space where different forms of artistic expression and social themes come together, exploring the relationship between society and the individual through sound, video, performance and publishing.

We do not intend to set a particular message or provide a single answer. Instead, we want to respect the themes that artists choose to engage with, whether they relate to society, politics, technology, the body, the environment or personal experiences. We also want to give artists the freedom to explore their own approaches and ways of expressing these ideas, without being limited by existing values or established forms.

By bringing music, moving images and performance together in the same space, we hope to create opportunities for unexpected connections between works and between people. We want SAGA to be a place where artists and audiences can encounter different perspectives and sensibilities, exchange ideas and discover new questions together, rather than arrive at a fixed conclusion.

We also want each event to live on beyond the day it takes place. Our plan is to document the events, interview participating artists and publish texts about their works and creative processes, bringing these materials together with new collaborations in a tabloid sized zine. We hope to share these publications with audiences and use the ideas, conversations and connections that emerge as a starting point for future activities. In this way, we aim to build an ongoing cycle of events, publishing, archiving and collaboration, with each activity opening up possibilities for the next.

Rather than presenting finished answers, we want to create opportunities to reflect on society through artistic expression, share questions and carry them forward into new forms of expression.

This is what we envision for SAGA.

‚SAGA’ THREE PRINCIPLES

01 — ARTIST AUTONOMY

Artists define their own questions, methods and forms of expression. SAGA does not prescribe a message or a predetermined answer.

02 — OPEN EXCHANGE

Different practices, perspectives and experiences meet in the same space. SAGA creates room for encounters, dialogue and unexpected connections.

03 — ARCHIVE & CONTINUITY

Each event will become part of an ongoing archive. Through publications, documentation and collaborations, what happens at SAGA will continue beyond the event.
